The San Diego 4 Wheelers

Club Information

The San Diego 4 Wheelers is one of the largest and oldest 4WD vehicle clubs in southern California. We are a non-profit family oriented organization and support Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation within the spirit of Tread Lightly. We help in the maintenance and preservation of existing 4WD OHV opportunities and the creation of new opportunities where possible. The principal function of the club is to promote and participate in safe and responsible off-highway four wheel drive activities and to educate the public on how to properly use and conserve our lands.

The club meets the first Thursday of each month (except February) at 7:00 PM at the Automotive Museum in Balboa Park. See Membership Information below for directions and map. A minimum of one run (usually more) per month is scheduled. Guests are always welcome at our meetings and runs. All vehicles must pass a safety inspection.

The Club schedules all types of runs:
o Hardcore runs to challenge the most built up vehicle and experienced driver.
o Scenic runs for stock vehicles and/or novice drivers.
o Instruction and training in 4 wheeling techniques (novice drivers welcome).
o Participation in all CA4WDC sanctioned events.
o Open to most types of 4WD vehicles with a wheelbase of 104" or less.

We are a member of and work closely with the California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs (CA4WDC). CA4WDC is a non-profit organization comprised of member clubs, individuals, and business firms united in a common objective -- The betterment of vehicle oriented outdoor recreation. As a member, we abide by their regulations and safety requirements including vehicle and trail courtesy.

The Club is a proud member of the following organizations:
o California Association of 4 Wheel Drives Clubs.
   o CORVA
   o Tread Lightly
o San Diego Off Road Coalition
   o Blue Ribbon Coalition
o United Four Wheel Drive Associations

Membership Information

Prospective members must be 18 years old, own a suitable 4x4, attend 3 meetings, participate in 6 runs within a year and be voted in by the membership.

A suitable 4x4 is just about any 4wd vehicle with a wheelbase under 104 inches and a 2 speed transfer case. Full size rigs have problems on some of the trails we do. While the wheelbase limit can be waived by a vote of the membership (and we do have a couple of members with full-sized rigs), those in the larger vehicles stand an excellent chance of experiencing severe body damage.

While modifications allow one to participate in the more difficult runs, stock vehicles are perfectly acceptable. Any brand is ok, although about 75% of our members own Jeeps. The vehicle will be required to pass a safety inspection before membership approval.

Meetings are held at 7:00 PM the first Thursday of each month except February at the Automotive Museum in Balboa Park. It is located adjacent the Aerospace museum. Head south on Hwy 163 to the Interstate 5/Park Blvd exit, and exit on Park Blvd. Turn left (north), go to the first entrance to Balboa Park, and turn left again. Look for a bunch of Jeeps.

Events are usually runs (we do at least one run a month), but also may be promotions (usually done in conjunction with local off road shops), fund raisers (such as yard sales), or other events (annual Christmas party). There is never a charge at events, unless the facility we are using charges a fee (campground, etc.)

Dues are $20.00 per year for the family and includes a vehicle plaque and flag. Additional plaques, t-shirts, jackets, etc. may be purchased by members.
